Damiana leaf (Tumera diffusa) – Works to restore nervous system, and has always been use as an aphrodisiac. “Damiana has been used to stimulate people with depression. It is a natural monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor, and so may be beneficial in treating depression… In women, in addition to anecdotal reports of increased sex drive, Damiana helps reduce hot flashes”. (Prescription for Herbal Healing, Phyllis A. Balch, p.55) Traditional Damiana is used to treat premature ejaculation, impotence, painful and delayed periods, cystitis, urethritis and poor bowel muscle tone.
Raspberry leaf – has been used for hundreds of years most commonly as a uterine tonic. It has been use to relax tight uterine muscles and also to tighten relaxed uterine muscles. The leaves contain high concentrations of several vitamins and minerals Boron, calcium, chromium, manganese, niacin, phosphorus, potassium, riboflavin, iron, magnesium, malic acid, selenium, silica, Thiamin and zinc. Vitamin C and vitamin E are present in large amounts as well as Vitamin A and some B complex. Increased Vitamin A intake in the form of the carotenoids of red raspberry leaf can aid the women’s immune system as well as aid healthy skin and bone development for the baby. Vitamin E serves to promote better circulation in the mother because of increasing blood volume during pregnancy.Red raspberry leaf also contains an easily assimilated form of calcium. An increased availability of calcium is necessary in controlling nerve response to pain during childbirth and in aiding bone development in the fetus. It also contains fragrine, an alkaloid which help tone the muscles of the pelvic region including the uterus. This allows the uterus to contract more powerfully and effectively during labor.
Sarsaparilla – is used worldwide to treat syphilis and other sexually transmitted disease, as a blood purifier, general tonic, sexual stimulant and wound healer. The natural steroidal glycosides found in sarsaparilla is an alternative to anabolic steroids.
Gentian Key actions: Bitter, digestive stimulant and eases stomach pain. Uses: “By improving digestive function, gentian increases the absorption of nutrients across the gut wall. It aids the absorption of a wide range of nutrients, including iron and vitamin B12, and is therefore useful for iron-deficiency anemia (usually resulting from blood loss)”. (Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine Andrew Chevallier, p. 101)
Saw Palmetto Key actions: anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, antiandrogenic and diuretic. Uses: It promotes urine flow and prostate health. “Saw palmetto is a tonic and is one of the few Western remedies that is considered to be anabolic – it strengthens and builds body tissues and encourages weight gain”. (Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine A. Chevallier, p. 136)
