Gymnema sylvestre – Hindi name means “sugar destroyer”. Gymnema is use to treat diabetes in its early stages and when “taken consistently for a year or more, it will help to prevent the condition deteriorating. Gymnema may help to regenerate cells in the pancreas, which secrete insulin, so it may be possible to control or reverse mild diabetes with diet and gymnema. The plant’s ability to block sweet tastes means that it can reduce sugar craving and contribute to weight loss programs”. (Enclyclopedia of Herbal Medicine, Andrew Chevallier, p. 218)

Jambul Key actions: lowers blood sugar levels, astringent, carminative and diuretic. Uses: “Jambul appears to have a significant hypoglycemic action, helping to lower blood glucose levels. It is therefore of value in diabetes. Jambul is also known to reduce glucose levels in the urine”. (Enclyclopedia of Herbal Medicine, Andrew Chevallier, p. 138) Jambul is also used for soothing stomachache, cramping and disperse gas. “It is used to treat diabetes because it quickly reduces blood sugar, apparently without any side effects”. (Herbal Healing, Phyllis A. Balch p. 85)

Holy Basil Key actions: Lowers blood sugar levels, antispasmodic, analgesic, lowers blood pressure, reduces fever, adaptogenic and anti-inflammatory. Uses: Holy Basil has “been established as a useful medicine for some types of diabetes”. “Research in India has shown that the plant helps lower blood pressure and has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and fever reducing properties”. (Enclyclopedia of Herbal Medicine, Andrew Chevallier, p. 118) Holy Basil Is an adaptogen, antibacterial, antidepressant, antioxidant, antiviral, carminative, diuretic expectorant, galactagogue (promotes the flow of mother’s milk), and immunomodulator. “Use of holy basil prevented increased corticosterone levels that indicate elevated stress levels”. (Adaptogens, David Wintson & Steven Maimes, P. 169) Protects the heart from stress, lower blood pressure and cholesterol. Holy Basil is an adaptogen, so it helps the body adapt to varying demand and stresses.

Fenugreek – “mucilage released from the herb coat the lining of the intestines and keep the stomach from emptying quickly, with the result that glucose enters the bloodstream more slowly after a meal... Fenugreek also contains compounds that help muscle tissue and the liver respond better to insulin”. (Herbal Healing, Phyllis A. Balch p. 66)

Burdock Key actions: Detoxifying, mild diuretic, antibiotic and antiseptic. Uses: “Burdock has antibacterial and antifungal properties, and diuretic and hypoglycemic (lowering blood sugar levels) effects. It also seems to have an antitumor action. Recent studies suggest the seeds are anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and hepatoprotective”. (Enclyclopedia of Herbal Medicine Andrew Chevallier, p. 65) Burdock is also used treat gout and kidney stones.
